From a neurophysiological perspective, feelings are the results of processes in your body that you can perceive because they cause specific reactions. With practice, you can become more aware of these perceptions. Feelings serve as valuable signals: they show which of your needs are being well met and which are not. That's why all feelings are welcome – without judgment.

  • Words we use to express feelings are always interpretations, categorisations, translations or models.
  • Access to feelings is facilitated by: pausing any activity, taking deep breaths, putting a hand on a part of your body, or other specific gestures or movements.
  • If you find it difficult to put your feelings into words, describe the sensations you notice in your body.
  • It is important to give the feelings space, to take them seriously and to take responsibility for them. At the same time, it will become clearer the more you practice that you are not at the mercy of your feelings. Different NVC methods can help you develop your agency.
  • Feelings are helpful because they guide you towards your needs.

Feelings are often sub-divided into 4 basic feelings: joy, sadness, anger and fear. Examples of words expressing feelings from each of the categories are: elated, sorrowful, disgruntled und worried. Of course, there are many more.

Printed cards containing words for feelings may help you find words that fit your emotions.
